What if the simplest gesture became part of an algorithm’s decision-making? In ‘Human in the Loop’, Emirati artist, robotics engineer, and researcher Dr Ahmad AlAttar invites audiences into an interactive sound installation where curiosity, movement, and listening become the tools for navigating an unseen technological landscape. On view at 421 Arts Campus in Abu Dhabi, the exhibition turns the language of artificial intelligence into a deeply physical experience.
Suspended ropes fill the gallery, each responding to a visitor’s touch with evolving sonic cues. What begins as playful exploration gradually reveals a hidden system, as participants learn to interpret subtle auditory shifts in search of an algorithm that constantly relocates. Rather than presenting technology as an abstract concept, AlAttar positions audiences within its logic, exposing the reciprocal relationship between human behaviour and machine response.
Drawing on his background in robotics and his participation in 421’s Artistic Development Program, AlAttar bridges scientific research and artistic experimentation to examine how algorithms quietly shape attention, agency, and everyday decision-making. The installation resists easy conclusions, instead encouraging visitors to consider the invisible feedback loops that increasingly define contemporary life. It is a work that is as playful as it is unsettling, inviting reflection on the boundaries between participation, control, and technological dependence.
