Karyn Olivier transforms Detroit’s industrial landscape into a meditation on memory, material, and collective endurance.

‘Bend, Break, Mend’ presents a compelling new chapter in the practice of Trinidad-born, Brooklyn-raised artist Karyn Olivier. The exhibition brings together recent works and newly commissioned sculptures that draw deeply from Detroit’s industrial histories, waterways, architecture, and postindustrial landscapes.
Working across sculpture, installation, and public intervention, Olivier has long explored the ways materials carry memory. Salvaged fragments, weathered surfaces, and industrial matter become repositories of labour, migration, extraction, and survival. In ‘Bend, Break, Mend’, these material histories are placed in dialogue with structures such as stepwells, sundials, and excavated ground, forms that measure time through shadow, erosion, depth, and movement rather than chronology alone.
Rather than treating history as fixed, Olivier reveals it as something continually reshaped through accumulation, fragmentation, and repair. The exhibition investigates the unstable boundaries between sand and asphalt, dirt and pavement, construction and decay, asking how landscapes absorb the traces of human experience while remaining sites of renewal and possibility.
Presented as part of MOCAD’s twentieth anniversary programme, ‘Bend, Break, Mend’ invites visitors to consider the physical world as an archive where every surface bears witness to the forces that have shaped it. It is an exhibition that quietly insists that memory is never static, but always bending, breaking, and mending.
This exhibition will be on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) from 8 August to 11 October 2026.
