Skills Workshop Exhibition – supported by ART AFRICA
The Welding and Entrepreneurship Skills Workshop for KwaZulu-Natal Youth is a community-based initiative that explores the relationship between art, practical skills, and economic empowerment. Facilitated by Kenneth Shandu through Bhuju Art and Design, the project aimed to equip unemployed and graduate youth aged 18 to 35 with basic welding and entrepreneurial skills. The initiative sought to open alternative pathways for artists and young people to sustain themselves through creative and technical production.
Conducted over 10 months in the Ntshongweni area, in the outer west of Durban, from 2024 to 2025, the workshop introduced participants to fundamental metalworking techniques and essential business knowledge. Through this process, participants developed practical abilities, confidence, and an understanding of how creative production can translate into economic opportunities within their communities. Through participants’ collaboration, the metal artworks produced during the workshop experimented with functional design, demonstrating how craft and entrepreneurship can intersect.
This project is supported by ART AFRICA.
