A sweeping exploration of colour, memory, and contemporary African imagination at Fondation Blachère.

Blue has long carried the weight of longing, spirituality, migration, and transformation. In ‘Afroblue’, Fondation Blachère brings together 36 artists from across Africa and its diasporas to examine the many lives of this evocative colour, revealing blue not simply as a visual motif, but as a language through which histories, identities, and futures are imagined. On view at the Fondation’s Gare de Bonnieux, the exhibition unfolds as a richly layered meditation on one of art’s most resonant chromatic traditions.
Spanning painting, sculpture, photography, textiles, installation, and mixed media, ‘Afroblue’ features works by artists including Wim Botha, Kudzanai Violet Hwami, Romuald Hazoumè, Abdoulaye Konaté, Oluwole Omofemi, Gideon Appah, Stacey Gillian Abe, Samuel Nnorom, Maya Inès Touam, and many others whose practices stretch across generations and geographies. Together, they transform blue into a site of reflection, where oceans become archives, skies hold ancestral memory, and pigment itself carries emotional and political force.
Adding another dimension to the exhibition, South African artist Wim Botha presents a new site-specific installation as part of a special carte blanche project, inviting visitors into an immersive dialogue between material, space, and perception.
More than a thematic survey, ‘Afroblue’ demonstrates how colour can become a powerful lens through which contemporary African artists articulate intimacy, displacement, resilience, and possibility, offering audiences a compelling encounter with the poetic and conceptual depth of today’s artistic practices.
