‘Mouth Close to Earth’ transforms discarded materials into monumental figures shaped by memory, spirituality and collective histories.

21 September 2026

Artist Tau Lewis brings her largest solo exhibition to date to Kunstmuseum Brandts in Odense, marking the artist’s first major presentation in Scandinavia. ‘Mouth Close to Earth’ unfolds as an immersive world of monumental textile works, masks and human-scale sculptural figures, where discarded materials become vessels for histories carried across generations.

Working with metres of reclaimed fabric, leather, shells and found objects, Lewis considers sustainability alongside spirituality, cultural inheritance and belonging. Her labour-intensive processes of sewing, weaving and assembling draw upon her Jamaican heritage while challenging hierarchies that have historically separated craft from fine art. The slowness of making becomes significant in itself, foregrounding care, repetition and attention in opposition to cultures of constant production and growth.

At Brandts, Lewis creates an enveloping installation populated by spirits, gods and material narratives. Several works have been created specifically for the exhibition and are accompanied by a soundscape developed with composer and musician Lyra Pramuk. The exhibition is connected by the ancient Sumerian myth of the goddess Inanna, through which Lewis explores transformation, spirituality, and the histories materials can hold.

This exhibition is on view at Kunstmuseum Brandts, Odense, Denmark, until 2 May 2027.
