Harold Offeh’s long-awaited London return reimagines estrangement as a site of collective possibility.

More than two decades after his last major solo exhibition in London, Ghanaian-British artist Harold Offeh returns to the city with ‘Trustful Strangers Induce Fearless Aliens’ at The Showroom, a timely meditation on belonging, otherness and the radical potential of imagination. Bringing together works from across a 25-year practice, the exhibition foregrounds Offeh’s distinctive ability to mobilise performance, humour and participation as tools for unsettling dominant cultural narratives and opening new modes of encounter.
Taking inspiration from James Baldwin’s seminal essay Stranger in the Village and the enduring symbolism of the alien within Afrofuturist thought, Offeh transforms estrangement from a condition of exclusion into a generative space of reflection and connection. Across video, performance and installation, figures of the stranger, the outsider, and the extraterrestrial become vehicles through which histories of migration, race and identity are reconsidered.
At once playful and politically incisive, ‘Trustful Strangers Induce Fearless Aliens’ invites audiences to imagine futures shaped not by fear of difference but by curiosity, solidarity and mutual care. In a moment marked by renewed anxieties around borders and belonging, Offeh’s exhibition offers a compelling proposition: that the alien may not be someone to fear, but someone through whom new worlds become possible.
