First Title

The largest, most important collection of contemporary South African design will launch the new Museum of African Design (MoAD) in a reinvented Art Deco industrial building in the Maboneng Precinct in downtown Johannesburg in October.

“In recognition of the importance of being the launch exhibition of the first museum dedicated solely to African design, we will be showing the most extensive Southern Guild (SG) collection to date. Included will be dynamic new pieces from 100 of the country’s top designers and artists as well as iconic work from the Southern Guild collections of the last 4 years,” says Trevyn McGowan, founder and director of the leading platform for collectible local design.

For the first time the 1500m² three level space, which Johannesburg architect Enrico Daffonchio has restored to retain the original Transvaal vernacular of the 30’s, will allow Southern Guild the space to display the design pieces in a way that will give full weight to the work and will allow the viewer to interact completely with each piece, McGowan says.

Partnered by steel giant, Arcelor Mittal SA, the Southern Guild 2013 Collection at MoAD will be the culmination of an enormously successful year in which collectible South African design has achieved unprecedented international recognition and progressed the local design industry in significant, revolutionary ways.

This has included almost sell out shows at the prestigious Design Days Dubai show in March, the Collective 1 fair in New York in May and Design Miami/Basel, Switzerland in June. The Design Miami/Basel Fair drew a record number of visitors including celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Kanye West as well as respected art and design patron, Roman Abramovich and resulted in extensive favourable media coverage including USA Modern Magazine for Southern Guild – the most respected international Collectable Design magazine.

Southern Guild has become internationally celebrated for representing excellence and authenticity in South African design since 2008 and is collaborating with leading gallerists including R20th and Freidman Benda in NY and Mint in London amongst others.

The Southern Guild 2013 Collection will include works from revered designers and artists such as Gregor Jenkin, Brett Murray, Cameron Platter, Conrad Botes, Dylan Lewis, Andile Dyalvane, Dokter and Misses, Joe Paine, Pieter Henning and Michaela Janse van Vuuren and talented new comers such as AtangTshikare, Southern Guild Design Foundation winner, Sibusiso Mthembu and Laurie Wiid van Heerden and will showcase the pieces that will be taken onto the international stage over the next 12 months.

Running from 24th October till 3 November 2013, the showcase will also include the announcement of the 2013 Southern Guild Design Foundation Awards (SGDF). SGDF, a non profit organization, recognizes, supports and propels the South African Design Industry at both established and emerging levels and the results of the 2012 awards will be presented.
