First Title

“Definitely, one of the greatest compliments I have every received was about me being

an ‘agent of change’: flattering but daunting. But then again, if not the artist then who?

In our hyper. Today, a single image can reach millions of people, at their fingertips.”

– Siwa Mgoboza, 1st RUNNER-UP

NATURE WOULD PREVAIL II & THE METROPOLIS WILL INTEGRATE III

Through the use of various textiles such as siShweshwe, Siwa’s work explores the history of his clanfolk, amaHlubi, whilst envisioning an African future that challenges societal norms. Having lived in both South America and Europe, and currently based in South Africa, Siwa draws inspiration from the blending of cultures, juxtapositions, parallels, fusions, clashes and interpretations.

Using collage as a technique to inform his work, Siwa places images, textures and fabrics together in an attempt at recreating the original meaning – exploring both the history of his clanfolk and the future of an Africa that challenges the status quo.
