Sonia Boyce transforms collective voice into an immersive act of resistance, joy and world-making at the Queens Museum.

What happens when a museum becomes a chorus? In ‘Demonstrate’, internationally acclaimed British-Jamaican artist Sonia Boyce invites audiences into a richly layered environment shaped by sound, movement, collaboration and collective imagination. Presented at the Queens Museum, the newly commissioned installation emerges from two days of gatherings with local community organisations, artists, educators and the Resistance Revival Chorus, foregrounding the voice as a powerful instrument of freedom, solidarity and social transformation.
Drawing on Boyce’s long-standing interest in improvisation and participatory practice, the exhibition transforms filmed encounters into an immersive constellation of video, photography and kaleidoscopic wallpaper installations. Moments of celebration, testimony, ritual and performance unfold across the galleries, creating a dynamic portrait of collective expression and shared agency.
Best known for her pioneering contributions to Black British art and her Golden Lion-winning presentation at the 2022 Venice Biennale, Boyce continues to challenge conventional notions of authorship through collaborative forms of making. In ‘Demonstrate’, artistic practice becomes a space for gathering, listening and imagining otherwise. The result is a timely meditation on community, resilience and the transformative potential of coming together to make one’s voice heard.
