Yet another Grahamstown National Festival of the Arts is upon us, and Sibikwa Arts is waiting to unleash two powerhouses of talent.
Prepare your senses for two smashing offerings, falling under the umbrella title of HAREENG Sibikwa. Public Oscillation is the Sibikwa Arts Dance Company’s offering, and The Sibikwa Arts African Orchestra will be presenting Re-Alignment 1. News just in is that renowned sax giant McCoy Mrubata will be making guest appearances at these performances of Re-Alignment 1: July 2 at 15:00, July 3 at 17:00 and July 5 at 17:00. Public Oscillation Last year the Sibikwa Arts Dance Company won an Ovation Award at the Festival for its exciting and innovative work. This year their new offering, Public Oscillation, choreographed by Thabo Rapoo (who won Standard Bank’s 2009 Award Young Artist in Dance) will explore movement with an opinion. It probes the issue: are we humans single entities or are we multiple beings that swing into life at the appropriate moment? The choreography threads provocatively between moments of emotion and opinion, oscillating between the moments. When does the moment begin when does it end? Perhaps it never ends but continues to reverberate in our bodies… This intriguing piece, which will play at the Arena at the Festival, will be performed by the entire male dance company of six dancers, accompanied by members of the Sibikwa Arts African Orchestra, who have composed an original score and soundscape for the piece under the guidance of Thabo Rapoo. Public Oscillation promises to be yet another inspirational performance from the Sibikwa Arts Dance Company, which comprises of Yuhl Headman, Freddie “Nkantolo” Zwane, Lehlohonolo Dube, Thapelo Kotlolo, Taemane Mothobi, and Lesego Ngwato. Re-Alignment 1 A search for the new and original; a new sound for the 21st century — that was the mandate for The Sibikwa Arts African Indigenous Orchestra. After seeing this delightful performance, chances are that you’ll agree it’s a mission accomplished! The Sibikwa Arts African Indigenous Orchestra’s eight musicians, who play traditional instruments such as the Uhadi, Horns, Drums, Marimba and Dinaka Pipes, will be joined, for this production, by three jazz musicians. The orchestra’s original compositions will receive a quirky infusion of jazz stylings as well as West African rhythms, celebrating in the process both the traditional and the new. A feature of Re-Alignment 1 is the lively exchange of rhythms and beats between the audience and the musicians. Last year at the Grahamstown Festival of the Arts, The Sibikwa Arts African Indigenous Orchestra, which had been part of a dance piece that received the Ovation award, received excellent reviews from an enthusiastic press.
