Fondazzjoni għall-Malta Biennale invites contemporary art leaders to propose a distinctive curatorial vision for the third edition of Malta Biennale, taking place across Malta and Gozo from March to May 2028.

Open Call:
Fondazzjoni għall-Malta Biennale has launched an international call for an Artistic Director for Malta Biennale 2028. The selected candidate will assume overall responsibility for the biennale’s artistic direction and management, develop its principal exhibition, and establish a clear artistic vision for its third edition.
Malta Biennale 2028 will take place between March and May 2028, continuing the international contemporary art platform established through its inaugural 2024 edition and second edition in 2026. Both previous editions were held under the patronage of the President of Malta and UNESCO.
Institutional Context:
Heritage Malta, the country’s national cultural heritage agency, spearheads the Malta Biennale, with participation from cultural organisations across Malta. Fondazzjoni għall-Malta Biennale forms an integral part of Heritage Malta while operating independently from the agency.
Heritage Malta manages more than 90 museums, monuments and heritage sites representing approximately 8,000 years of history, including seven World Heritage sites and 15 underwater sites. Malta Biennale activates selected historic locations across Malta and Gozo, bringing contemporary artistic practices into conversation with the islands’ cultural heritage.
The biennale seeks to connect past and present through contemporary art while sparking dialogue on current issues, engaging broader publics, and facilitating cultural transformation.
Eligibility and Criteria:
Applicants should be cultural leaders working in contemporary art and able to assume responsibility for the artistic management of a major international biennale.
The Artistic Director will be expected to establish a distinctive artistic vision and develop the main exhibition within agreed resources. The position requires consistency and excellence across the artistic, managerial and organisational dimensions of Malta Biennale 2028.
Candidates must submit a curriculum vitae, motivational letter and thematic concept for Malta Biennale 2028. The thematic proposal must include a working title and concept statement.
Evaluation Process:
The selected Artistic Director will work closely with the heads of the biennale’s production and administration sections and will report to the President and Executive Board of Malta Biennale 2028.
