First Title

Sudanese artists reassembling memory across borders, bodies and time.

29 April 2026

In Cairo this May, ‘Scattered Memories’ unfolds as an intimate yet expansive meditation on loss, remembrance and the fragile architectures of cultural memory. Initiated by the Goethe-Institut Sudan in collaboration with the Humboldt Forum Berlin, the exhibition resists the fixity of a single site, instead beginning a transcontinental journey that mirrors the dispersal it seeks to interrogate.

Across three days, the Goethe-Institut Kairo becomes a sensory field where image, sound, scent and taste converge. Collage, film, music and performance intersect with food and storytelling, crafting a layered encounter that moves beyond representation into lived experience. The works do not simply recall what has been lost. They probe how memory is shaped, distorted and collectively negotiated across shifting geographies.

Foregrounding Sudanese artists, ‘Scattered Memories offers a vital platform for voices navigating displacement and continuity. Public programmes, including discussions, guided tours and communal rituals such as the traditional coffee corner, extend the exhibition into a space of gathering and exchange.

Here, memory is neither static nor singular. It is scattered, contested and continually reassembled, insisting on presence even in the face of erasure.

This exhibition will be on view at Goethe-Institut Kairo from 1 to 3 May 2026.
