rootoftwo transforms MOCAD into a participatory arena where technology, democracy, and collective imagination collide.

6 July 2026

As conversations around artificial intelligence, surveillance, and digital governance become increasingly urgent, ‘Anyspace? Whatever’. Invites audiences to consider who shapes the future of the cities we inhabit. Presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, the exhibition is the latest project by Detroit-based collaborative practice rootoftwo, led by Cézanne Charles and John Marshall, whose work bridges art, design, technology, and civic engagement.

At the heart of the exhibition is The Rotunda, an immersive architectural installation that invites visitors to engage in dialogue with a custom AI system. Through these exchanges, participants reflect on questions of privacy, governance, digital rights, and public life, while their contributions gradually reshape the installation’s evolving public voice. Rather than presenting technology as neutral, the work reveals the political and social forces embedded within the systems that increasingly structure everyday experience.

Alongside the installation, the cooperative tabletop game 463NCY invites players to navigate a surveillance-driven city, confronting ethical dilemmas surrounding autonomy, data ownership, and resistance. Through play, discussion, and participation, ‘Anyspace? Whatever.’ positions imagination as a vital civic tool, proposing that more equitable technological futures can only emerge through collective inquiry. The exhibition offers a timely reminder that the future of our digital worlds is not predetermined, but something to be negotiated together.

This exhibition will be on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit from 11 July until 20 September 2026.
