The 2025 FNB Art Prize winner brings a practice shaped by identity, history and political inquiry to one of Johannesburg’s most significant public art institutions.

Johannesburg Art Gallery welcomes Thato Toeba, winner of the 2025 FNB Art Prize, for a solo exhibition presented by FNB Art Joburg and Stevenson, in partnership with the city’s wider cultural programme.

Born in Maseru, Lesotho, Toeba works across art, law and social sciences research, bringing these disciplines into a practice that examines the structures through which identity, history and power are constructed. Through mixed-media photomontage and assemblage, the artist reconfigures images and narratives, creating works that invite audiences to consider how histories are recorded, contested and remembered.

Toeba’s FNB Art Prize marks a significant milestone. As the first artist from Lesotho to receive the award, their presentation at Johannesburg Art Gallery brings a distinctive Southern African perspective into one of the city’s major public cultural institutions.

The exhibition also reflects the FNB Art Prize’s growing role in creating platforms for contemporary African artistic practices. Presented within Johannesburg’s dynamic cultural landscape, Toeba’s solo exhibition offers audiences an opportunity to encounter a practice attentive to the relationship between personal experience and larger systems of representation.

This exhibition is on view at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, Johannesburg, opening on 6 September 2026.
