What happens when painting escapes the wall? In ‘RARE ESSENCE’, New York-based artist Eric N. Mack reimagines the Speed Art Museum’s Gheens Court as a site of flux, where textiles, colour and spatial intervention converge to create an immersive encounter with abstraction. Presented as part of the museum’s Sam Gilliam Visiting Artist Program, the exhibition marks a significant new chapter in Mack’s ongoing exploration of materiality, identity and form.
Known for his expansive textile-based installations, Mack works with found fabrics, garments and everyday materials, transforming them into dynamic compositions that blur distinctions between painting, sculpture, architecture and fashion. His practice embraces movement and improvisation, allowing colour, texture and drape to operate as agents of both visual pleasure and cultural meaning.
In ‘RARE ESSENCE’, these concerns unfold across the museum’s architecture, activating the space through gestures that are at once intimate and monumental. The exhibition resonates with the legacy of Sam Gilliam, whose radical rethinking of painting challenged conventional boundaries between object, surface and environment. Rather than offering a static display, Mack creates an experience that invites visitors to navigate shifting relationships between body, space and material.
At once exuberant and contemplative, ‘RARE ESSENCE’ positions abstraction as a living language, one capable of carrying histories, desires and new possibilities for connection.
