For the sixth annual FNB Joburg Art Fair, we turn our focus to photography. A host of Special Projects are dedicated to the medium, and we’ll be bringing both iconic names and new talent to the Sandton Convention Centre, where you can view the largest collection of photography from the continent under one roof.
Our Featured Artist for the Fair is arguably the country’s most acclaimed photographer, David Goldblatt. He was one of the first South African artists to be represented in New York’s Museum of Modern Art, and just this year he was announced the winner of the Infinity Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Center for Photography, New York. Goldblatt’s work is exhibited and collected in some of the leading museums and collections around the world, and Artlogic is proud to present his series, The Structure of Things Then – And After in collaboration with the Goodman Gallery, at the FNB Joburg Art Fair.
The Pirelli space always causes a stir at the FNB Joburg Art Fair, and this year is set to be no exception. Pirelli has commissioned Nandipha Mntambo to produce a series of artworks inspired by their Formula 1 campaign slogan: ‘Let’s Dance’. These will be on display in a dedicated space at the Art Fair.
We will also present exhibitions by acclaimed photographers Santu Mofokeng and Roger Ballen, both of whom have won countless awards for their powerful work.
Artlogic is intent on bringing works from all over the continent to the FNB Joburg Art Fair, and we have therefore created two special projects that celebrate photography in Africa. Together with Arts Alive, we will present the show Phantasms of the Non-City, a selection from the 2013 edition of the LagosPhoto Festival, which will take place in Nigeria in October. This project will hopefully be the start of further collaborations between Johannesburg and Lagos.
As the African Biennial of Photography, Bamako Encounters, is not taking place this year because of the conflict in Mali, we have partnered with the French Institute to host the exhibition African Emerging Photography. The show, which is curated by Michket Krifa and Laura Serani, Artistic Directors of the 8th and 9th Bamako Encounters, is a collection of the work of 12 dynamic and creative photographers that have exhibited during previous editions of Bamako Encounters.
