An international open call offering time, space, and resources for photographers and image-makers to develop new work in Syracuse, New York.
14 April 2026

Open Call:
Light Work invites applications for its internationally recognised Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program.
Each year, 12 to 15 artists are selected for a one-month residency in Syracuse, USA, to focus on independent creative projects.
Institutional Context:
Founded in 1973, Light Work is a non-profit, artist-run organisation dedicated to supporting artists working in photography and related media through residencies, publications, and access to professional facilities.
The AIR program operates in partnership with organisations, including Autograph ABP and the Darryl Chappel Foundation, which contribute to its international scope and support network.
Eligibility and Criteria:
The residency is open globally to artists working in photography or image-based media, regardless of nationality.
Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to their practice and the ability to use the residency period to develop or complete a project.
Evaluation Process:
Applications are reviewed by a selection committee, with the main review period concluding in late fall.
Due to the high volume and quality of submissions, selection is highly competitive, and final decisions are typically communicated by December.
Practical Information:
Selected artists receive:
- A $7,500 stipend
- A furnished apartment in Syracuse
- 24-hour access to professional facilities
- Technical and staff support throughout the residency
Artists spend one month in residence, working independently on projects of their choosing. Their work is later published in Contact Sheet: The Light Work Annual, accompanied by a commissioned essay.
The deadline for applications is 30 June 2026.
Applications and Queries:
Applications are submitted online via SlideRoom.
Applicants receive confirmation upon submission and may be contacted if further information is required.
