The Gwangju Biennale Foundation has launched an international open call for the Artistic Director of the 17th Gwangju Biennale, inviting experienced curators and cultural leaders to shape the artistic vision of one of Asia’s leading contemporary art biennials. The Foundation is seeking a candidate with a strong curatorial record, international outlook, and the ability to lead the Biennale’s conceptual, artistic, and public programme while strengthening its global profile.
Institutional Context:
Founded in 1995, the Gwangju Biennale is Asia’s oldest contemporary art biennial and a globally recognised platform for artistic experimentation, critical discourse, and cultural exchange. Deeply connected to Gwangju’s democratic history and cultural identity, the Biennale continues to engage with urgent contemporary issues through ambitious international exhibitions.
The selected Artistic Director will be responsible for developing the curatorial framework and artistic direction of the 17th edition, while reinforcing the Biennale’s distinctive identity and expanding its international impact.
Eligibility and Criteria:

- Korean and international curators and contemporary art professionals
- Individual applicants or curatorial teams
- Candidates with substantial experience organising major exhibitions, biennials, museums, or international contemporary art projects
