Hangar invites practitioners across disciplines to apply for its Lisbon-based residency programme, offering a process-driven environment for research, exchange, and experimentation, with stays ranging from one to three months.

Hangar – Centro de Investigação Artística has opened applications for its Longitudes Residency, welcoming artists, writers, curators, researchers, and musicians working across disciplines.
The programme is non-prescriptive and process-based, encouraging participants to develop projects in response to their environment or to pursue research drawing on Lisbon’s cultural and artistic context.
Institutional Context
Based in the historic neighbourhood of Graça in Lisbon, Hangar operates as an artistic research centre focused on dialogue, experimentation, and exchange.
The residency programme foregrounds interdisciplinary and conceptual practices, with particular attention to cross-cultural connections and to explorations of postcolonial and diasporic experiences, histories, and memory.
Eligibility and Criteria
The open call is open to:
- Writers working across poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and research-based practices.
- Visual artists across disciplines, including painting, drawing, photography, and multimedia
- Curators, art researchers, and those engaged in theoretical or research-based projects
- Musicians, including producers, vocalists, DJs, and instrumentalists
Applicants are expected to engage critically with their practice and to participate in the programme’s collaborative, research-oriented environment.
Evaluation Process
Participants are selected based on the strength of their practice and their potential to engage with the residency’s emphasis on dialogue, experimentation, and interdisciplinary exchange.
Practical Information
The residency includes:
- Tutorials with the residency curator
- Gallery and atelier visits
- An Open Day to present the work developed during the residency
Participants are provided with accommodation and shared workspace, as well as access to Hangar’s facilities.
Residencies are offered on a short- or medium-term basis, ranging from one to three months.
