GIPCA is hosting’the names we give’, a weekend long event of performances, jazz, film, public interventions and a groupthink called ‘Delicious Sensations’.
From the Press Release: “Facilitated by Donald Gordon Creative Arts Award Winner, Raél Jero Salley, the event runs from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 May at the UCT’s Hiddingh Campus. As part of the opening of ‘the names we give’ at 18:00 on Friday 13 May the Mike Rossi Quartet facilitates a musical journey from New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz to the Mother City, Cape Town with stops (in)between. The Mike Rossi Quartet is Mike Rossi (woodwinds), Dave Ridgeway (bass), Nicholas Williams (piano) and Gus Warden (drums). ‘the names we give’ closing concert on 15 May at 18:00 is Mingus Ah Um!, a musical tribute to legendary jazz composer, bassist, bandleader and civil rights activist Charles Mingus, directed by Mike Rossi. It features Darren English (trumpet), William Haubrich (trombone), Mike Rossi (saxophones), Dave Ridgeway (bass), Nicholas Williams (piano), Gus Warden (drums), and the UCT Saxophone Quartet: Andrew Hoole, Nick Hurworth, Mike Rossi, Jessica van der Merwe. The performance features compositions mainly from the classic Charles Mingus 1959 album Mingus Ah Um. There will be a short lecture on the life and music of Charles Mingus following the performance. On Saturday 14 May at 14:00 there is a rehearsal performance of Flores de Papel (Paper Flowers), written by Egon Wolff, directed by Mwenya Kabwe and Sara Matchett. Then there will then be a play reading of Dutchman, written by Amiri Baraka, directed by Lara Bye. Donald Gordon Creative Arts Award winners, Jamila Rodrigues, Steven van Wyk and Kristina Johnston will be premiering their work,Fractography – the untold story of Napoleon and Josephine. Another play reading will be Coloured Son X, written by Ashraf Johaardien, directed by Amy Jephta. On Saturday evening there is a free Art Attack party featuring the music of Ntone Edjabe and Sannie Fox and Machineri, as well as performance installations by Liza Grobler, Sanjin Muftic, Chas Unwin and iKapa Dance Theatre’s Theo Ndindwa. On Sunday at 13:30 there are film screenings curated by Lesedi Mogoatlhe, including Hyenas, directed by Djibril Diop Mambety and Story of My Beautiful Country, directed by Khalo Matabane.
