Supporting researchers and artists to uncover and amplify underrepresented narratives in American craft through a $5,000 fellowship and national publication platform.

14 April 2026

Open Call:

The Center for Craft invites applications for its Craft Archive Fellowship, with the 2026 cycle open and a deadline of May 20, 2026.

Up to four to six fellowships are awarded annually to support archival research projects focused on underrepresented and nondominant craft histories in the United States.

Institutional Context:

The Center for Craft is a leading US organisation dedicated to advancing craft research, supporting artists and scholars, and expanding the field through grants, fellowships, and public programmes.

The Craft Archive Fellowship specifically aims to encourage research into historically marginalised narratives, including feminist, queer, Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian American and Pacific Islander, and other overlooked perspectives in craft.

Eligibility and Criteria:

The fellowship is open to scholars, independent researchers, and artist-researchers at all career stages, from emerging to established.

Applicants should propose a clearly defined archival research project and demonstrate the ability to carry it out within the fellowship period.

In general, applicants must be eligible to receive taxable income in the United States for the duration of the project.

Evaluation Process:

Applications are reviewed by a selection panel composed of scholars, writers, and practitioners in the field.

Selection is based on the strength of the research proposal, its contribution to underrepresented craft histories, and the feasibility of the proposed methodology and timeline.

Practical Information:

Each fellow receives a $5,000 grant to support archival research conducted over a twelve-month period.

The fellowship runs roughly from September 2026 to September 2027 and supports research conducted in archives of the fellow’s choosing.

Fellows also:

  • Participate in a public virtual programme hosted by the Center for Craft.
  • Publish their research as an article in Hyperallergic, increasing international visibility.

The Deadline for applications is 20 May 2026.

Applications and Queries:

Applications are submitted via SlideRoom and require a project proposal, timeline, budget, and supporting materials.

An optional virtual information session is typically held during the application period.
