To help visitors get the most out of their trip back in time, the gallery has put together a few events relating to its French Connections exhibition, which include works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse and South Africa’s Gerard Sekoto.
“We are very proud of this exhibition which, admittedly, is immense and includes artists from the precursors of Impressionism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism periods,” said Musha Neluheni , Education Officer at the Johannesburg Art Gallery.
“French Connections looks at the period from 1830 to the mid 20th century and focuses on France as a location. It incorporates French artists as well as non-French artists who lived and worked in France during this time period.”
The connections to this magnetic country stretch far and wide, and include the pioneer of South African urban black art and social realism, Sekoto, who lived in Paris under self-imposed exile from 1947. On Friday 23 November, a panel discussion will take place on the relevance of European collections within South African museums, from 3pm till 4:30pm. Fans of the great Gerard Sekoto should make sure they do not miss Gerard Sekoto Day on Sunday 16 December. Walkabouts will take place from 10am till 11am and again from 2pm till 3pm.
