Vantage Point 13 at Sharjah Art Foundation expands the language of documentary photography through six newly commissioned bodies of work.

What does documentary photography become when certainty gives way to ambiguity? ‘Vantage Point 13’ at Sharjah Art Foundation invites audiences to reconsider the image as a site of inquiry rather than evidence, bringing together six newly commissioned projects that challenge the conventions of photographic storytelling. The exhibition marks a new chapter for the Foundation’s celebrated photography platform in its dedicated Photography Gallery in Al Manakh, Sharjah.
Curated by Sara Al Mheiri and Osemudiamen Ekore, the exhibition features works by Luisa Dörr, Latifa AlBokhari, Sathish Kumar, Adam Rouhana, Guanyu Xu and Maheder Haileselassie. Their practices move between portraiture, landscape, installation and experimental image-making, examining how photography can bear witness to memory, identity, displacement and the politics of visibility. Rather than presenting documentary photography as a fixed record, the exhibition proposes it as a medium that continually negotiates between fact and interpretation.
Across large-scale prints, immersive installations and material interventions, ‘Vantage Point 13’ stretches the possibilities of lens-based practice, dissolving the boundaries between archive and imagination, testimony and construction. The result is an exhibition that foregrounds photography’s capacity to question inherited narratives while opening new ways of seeing the world.
At a moment when images circulate with unprecedented speed and authority, ‘Vantage Point 13’ reminds us that every photograph carries multiple truths, inviting viewers to look beyond what is immediately visible and engage with the layered realities that images both reveal and conceal.
