The Studio Museum in Harlem continues its long-standing commitment to nurturing emerging artistic voices with ‘Through Motion and Repose: Expanding the Walls 2026’, an exhibition showcasing the work of seventeen young photographers from its acclaimed teen programme, Expanding the Walls: Making Connections Between Photography, History, and Community.
Bringing together images that move between the restless rhythm of New York’s streets and the quiet intimacy of domestic spaces, the exhibition reflects on the dual forces that shape contemporary urban life. Through portraits of loved ones, familiar neighbourhoods, fleeting encounters, and moments of contemplation, these young artists transform the everyday into powerful visual narratives rooted in observation, memory, and belonging.
Photography becomes both a documentary and a poetic tool, revealing how stillness and movement coexist in the lives of a generation coming of age within one of the world’s most dynamic cities. Whether capturing the blur of a subway platform or the tenderness of a family interior, the works invite viewers to look more closely at the people and places that define community.
Established in 2001, Expanding the Walls has become a cornerstone of the Studio Museum’s educational mission, supporting teenage artists through mentorship, workshops, and dialogue with leading contemporary practitioners. ‘Through Motion and Repose’ stands as both the culmination of that journey and a compelling reminder that the future of photography lies in fresh perspectives willing to see the familiar anew.
