Johny Pitts maps the poetics of being ‘Afropean’ through image, memory and encounter.

14 April 2026

At MEP Studio, Johny Pitts ‘Black Bricolage unfolds as a quietly radical meditation on Black life in Europe, assembling a constellation of images, notes and lived encounters into an immersive visual essay. Spanning two decades of work, the exhibition resists fixed narratives, instead offering a fluid, intimate cartography of Afropean identity that is at once personal and political.

Pitts moves through cities such as Paris, Lisbon, Berlin and Marseille with a deliberate attentiveness to the everyday. His lens lingers not on spectacle but on the subtle textures of daily life, where histories of migration, colonial entanglement and cultural exchange surface in gestures, spaces and conversations. The result is a body of work grounded in proximity and care, where photography and writing operate as a single, extended act of witnessing.

Rather than defining Afropean identity, ‘Black Bricolage opens it up as a generative space of possibility. Here, Blackness fully shapes contemporary Europe, not as an addendum but as a central force. In this layered installation, Pitts invites viewers to read, look and move, tracing connections between past and present, and assembling their own meanings from the fragments on view.

This exhibition is on view at MEP Studio from 10 April til 24 May 2026.
