The highly anticipated fifth edition of the Ellipse Prize has arrived, spotlighting Ghana’s vibrant contemporary art scene. This year’s competition, themed ‘Butterfly Effect,’ brings attention to five remarkable artists who shape conversations around identity, history, and transformation through their unique artistic practices.

Meet the Finalists

Selected from 82 applications, the five finalists of the 2025 Ellipse Prize represent a diverse range of artistic approaches and mediums:

  • Sena Burgundy (@senaburgundy) – A painter known for his blue-toned figures that symbolize introspection and self-awareness, blending dreamlike landscapes with realism.
  • Reginald Boateng (@reginaldboateng_) – A visual artist and photographer whose work fuses tradition and modernity, often influenced by Ghanaian heritage and Kente textiles.
  • Emmanuel Aggrey Tieku (@studiosashman) – A multidisciplinary artist who repurposes discarded textiles to craft thought-provoking works that address identity, overconsumption, and colonial legacies.
  • Nana Frimpong Oduro (@frizzlemadeit) – A photographer and art director creating surreal, dark-toned compositions that explore themes of interdependence, solidarity, and the human condition.
  • Dela Anyah (@dela.anyah) – A sculptor working with worn-out tyres and license plates, using traditional weaving techniques to challenge perceptions of waste and sustainability.

Exhibition in Accra

The finalists will showcase their works in a dedicated group exhibition for the second consecutive year. Hosted at The Mix Design Hub, a renowned creative space in Accra, the exhibition will run from April 11 to 27, 2025. This platform allows the artists to engage with a broader audience and connect with key figures in the Ghanaian and international art communities.

The 2025 Ellipse Prize winner will be announced on June 4, 2025. In addition to a production grant, the recipient will exhibit their work at the prestigious AKAA—ALSO KNOWN AS AFRICA fair in Paris from October 24 to 26, 2025, providing a crucial stepping stone to international exposure.
