Leonardo Sitoe’s ‘Dreamscapes in Transit’ charts the shifting terrain between memory, movement and belonging in Johannesburg
23 June 2026

At a time when cities are increasingly defined by movement, uncertainty and layered histories, Leonardo Sitoe’s ‘Dreamscapes in Transit’ offers a compelling meditation on what remains when the boundaries between waking life and the subconscious begin to blur. Curated by Muyon Mafulu, the exhibition brings together painting, drawing and sculpture shaped by the artist’s recurring dreams and daily journeys through Johannesburg.
Drawing from the city’s fragmented geographies and enduring legacies of separation, Sitoe constructs richly imagined Afro-surreal landscapes where memory, desire and anxiety coexist. Figures emerge and dissolve, familiar spaces transform, and dream encounters become portals through which broader questions of identity and belonging can be explored.
“Dreams have a way of carrying the city with them,” notes the exhibition statement, a sentiment that resonates throughout the works on view. Rather than offering escape, Sitoe’s dreamscapes become sites of reflection, revealing the emotional and psychological traces embedded within urban life.
Traversing the space between the personal and the collective, ‘Dreamscapes in Transit’ invites viewers on a journey through the subconscious while simultaneously reimagining the city itself. It is an exhibition that asks not only what dreams remember, but what they might teach us about how we inhabit the worlds we share.
This exhibition is on view at the KingKong Building, 8 Verwey Street, Troyeville, Johannesburg, until 9 July 2026.
