First Title

Reframing Black life through the radical clarity of the everyday.

14 April 2026

At the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, ‘Derrick Adams: View Master unfolds as both an archive and a proposition, assembling more than 100 works that trace two decades of the artist’s expansive, multidisciplinary practice. This first mid-career survey positions Adams not simply as a chronicler of contemporary Black experience, but as a visual strategist, reconfiguring representation through a language of pattern, colour, and compositional play.

Across painting, collage, sculpture, video, and performance, Adams insists on the primacy of leisure, pleasure, and interiority. His figures, often faceted and kaleidoscopic, inhabit spaces of rest and self-possession, countering dominant narratives that frame Black life through spectacle or struggle. Instead, ‘View Master offers a deliberate shift: Blackness as lived, as ordinary, as sovereign.

The exhibition moves with a rhythmic clarity, where repetition becomes a politics of visibility and joy emerges as a critical gesture. In Adams’s hands, the everyday is not incidental but monumental, transformed into an iconography that resonates with the complexity and richness of contemporary culture. Here, seeing is not passive but an active recalibration, a view that asks what it means to look and to be seen anew.

This exhibition is on view at the ICA Boston from 16 April 2026.
