First Title

Spier Architectural Arts’ CONSTRUCT has been nominated as one of the Most Beautiful Objects in South Africa (MBOISA) by Sarah Jane Buitendach (Sunday Times Home Weekly and Fashion Weekly editor), in this year’s Design Indaba competition.

Construct 01

The wearable art pieces were painstakingly hand-crafted using 9kt brushed rose gold and tiny mosaic components (as small as 1-2mm) of traditional Venetian glass, local materials and precious stones. Each 4.2 x 8cm inlay required 60 hours of mosaic work.

CONSTRUCT is the result of a collaborative process between architect Liani van der Westhuizen, jeweller Idané Burger and mosaic artists Miranda Vinjwa and Zoleka Xekethwana, with the mosaic inlays based on artworks by Cape Town artist, Alison Riordan.

R1 (the cost of an SMS vote) won’t buy you much in terms of world-class design, but it could help showcase Spier’s designs to the world.
