Woody De Othello transforms everyday objects into vessels of memory, spirit and renewal at Pérez Art Museum Miami.

9 June 2026

At Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), Miami-born artist Woody De Othello returns to his hometown with ‘coming forth by day, an immersive solo exhibition that blurs the boundaries between body, object and spirit. Bringing together a new body of ceramic and wood sculptures, tiled wall works and a monumental bronze installation, the exhibition invites viewers into a contemplative environment where materiality becomes a conduit for ancestral memory and metaphysical reflection.

Known for animating domestic objects such as mirrors, clocks and telephones, De Othello imbues the familiar with an uncanny vitality. His anthropomorphic forms bend, lean and embrace, carrying the emotional residue of lived experience while drawing on diasporic African spiritual traditions, including the concept of nkisi, objects believed to hold inner power and presence.

The exhibition’s title references the ancient Egyptian Book of Coming Forth by Day, invoking themes of transformation, rebirth and passage. Through clay-painted walls, subtle sensory interventions and richly textured sculptural forms, De Othello constructs a space where the everyday becomes sacred and where objects emerge as living witnesses to history, feeling and the enduring relationship between earth and spirit.

This exhibition is on view at the Pérez Art Museum Miami in Florida until 28 June 2026.
