Bouchra Khalili’s major Scandinavian exhibition at Malmö Konsthall explores storytelling, belonging, and the collective power of memory.

This summer, Malmö Konsthall presents ‘How to Call a Ghost’, a major solo exhibition by Moroccan French artist Bouchra Khalili, marking the largest presentation of her work ever staged in Scandinavia. Bringing together film, installation, printmaking, and textile, the exhibition traces Khalili’s sustained engagement with migration, community, political imagination, and the transformative power of storytelling.
Working collaboratively with participants whose voices are often excluded from dominant historical narratives, Khalili creates works that blur the boundaries between personal testimony and collective memory. Across the exhibition, stories become acts of resistance, reclaiming overlooked histories while imagining more equitable futures. Site-specific installations place earlier and recent works into conversation with Malmö Konsthall’s distinctive architecture, creating a chorus of voices that resonate across time and place.
At the heart of ‘How to Call a Ghost’ is the idea of the circle, both as a symbol of continuity and as a space for gathering through oral tradition. Featuring acclaimed works including The Tempest Society, The Circle Project, The Public Storyteller, and the recent film The Public Scribe, the exhibition offers a timely reflection on belonging, democracy, and the enduring capacity of shared narratives to reshape our understanding of the present.
