Ten emerging voices from Tlhagella reimagine presence, memory, and becoming.
29 April 2026

At the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria, ‘Between Here and Elsewhere’ convenes the Top 10 artists of the 2025/26 Tlhagella Incubation Programme in a resonant articulation of emergence. Conceived as both an exhibition and a threshold, the presentation marks a pivotal moment for a cohort shaped by mentorship, curatorial training, and sustained engagement with the infrastructures of visibility.
Tlhagella, meaning “show up,” operates as both provocation and promise, calling artists from underrepresented contexts into the public sphere with renewed agency. Here, that imperative unfolds across a constellation of practices attentive to the body, to history, and to the shifting terrains of belonging. The exhibition’s title gestures toward multiplicity: a condition of being suspended between temporalities, geographies, and states of consciousness, where memory and lived experience coalesce.
Curated by Puleng Plessie in collaboration with the artists, the exhibition resists singular narratives, instead offering a polyphonic meditation on what it means to inhabit in-between spaces. In doing so, ‘Between Here and Elsewhere’ positions these artists not simply as emerging, but as already shaping the contours of contemporary discourse.
This exhibition will be on view at Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria, on 1 May 2026.
