Vanessa Amoah Opoku’s ‘Synthesising Realities’ explores how technology, photography and memory shape our relationships to home, family and origin.

What connects us to a place, a person or a history when distance intervenes? At ifa-Galerie Stuttgart, Vanessa Amoah Opoku turns to photography, technology and materiality to consider how images can do more than represent the world. They can become spaces through which relationships form, and realities are reconstructed.
Curated by Opoku together with writer June Drevet, ‘Synthesising Realities’ takes as its starting point their collaboratively developed artist book of the same name, presented alongside three works by Opoku. Moving through questions of family, origin and belonging, the exhibition considers how personal histories intersect with increasingly technological ways of seeing and experiencing the world.
Digital sensuality and materiality sit alongside questions about the body’s relationship to technology. Opoku also examines postcolonial technologies of perception and emerging forms of photographic image-making, creating space to reconsider familiar ways of looking.
Rather than treating technology and memory as opposing forces, Synthesising Realities brings them into conversation, asking how images might carry connections across bodies, histories and geographies.
This exhibition is on view at the ifa-Galerie Stuttgart until 1 November 2026.
