From Accra to Tokyo and from Singapore to Buenos Aires, over 60% of their exhibitors hail from the Global South. The 72 galleries from 33 countries that make up Art Dubai Contemporary will include 16 first-time exhibitors, and their strongest-ever presentations from Africa and South Asia to date. They have also announced the largest-ever participation of Dubai-based galleries and artists, reflecting the continued maturing of the art scene in Dubai.

Art Dubai 2023 will see an expanded Art Dubai Digital, which launched to critical and commercial success in 2022. Curated by Singapore-based educator and arts writer Clara Che Wei Peh, Art Dubai Digital’s 2023 edition will feature a selection of the most innovative digital platforms, virtual art spaces, artist collectives, Decentralised Autonomous Organisations (DAOs) and traditional bricks and mortar galleries, whose programmes are challenging and pushing forward new models for artistic production and support.

Bangkok-based curator Vipash Purichanont is overseeing the 2023 edition of Art Dubai’s Bawwaba section, which will comprise solo presentations by 11 artists who hail from across the Global South. Across painting and tapestry, filmmaking and performance, this section explores how these contemporary artists bring forth sociocultural concerns within their worlds.

The 2023 edition of Art Dubai Modern is curated by Paris-based critic and curator Mouna Mekouar and Italian art historian Lorenzo Giusti and features solo presentations by the region’s Modern masters, reflecting Art Dubai’s continued commitment to curatorial scholarship and art historical research. The selection focuses on the 1960s and ‘70s pioneers of contemporary art in the MENASA area with artists, artists whose works are retrospectively playing a key role in today’s art and reflect the cultural richness and diversity of the region.
