In a landmark announcement that underscores the Gulf’s growing stature on the global art map, Art Basel has confirmed the launch of Art Basel Qatar, a new fair set to debut in Doha in February 2026. Organised in collaboration with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), QC+, and Art Basel’s parent company, MCH Group, the initiative marks a bold expansion into the MENA region—one that seeks to both platform and propel its rich, complex cultural landscape.
Art Basel Qatar will be hosted across the M7 creative hub and the Doha Design District in downtown Msheireb—steps away from the National Museum of Qatar and other architectural and artistic landmarks. Though framed as an art fair, the project aims to be far more: a year-round cultural engine that engages the public supports artists, nurtures collectors, and enhances market infrastructure across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.
The announcement builds on two decades of cultural investment under the stewardship of Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums. From opening the National Museum of Qatar and the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum to establishing creative incubators like Fire Station and Liwan Design Studios, Qatar has steadily positioned itself as a hub for artistic experimentation and exchange. Art Basel Qatar is the latest step in a vision set forth by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to transform Qatar into a knowledge-based, innovation-driven society.
“This is a groundbreaking project,” said Andrea Zappia, Chairman and CEO of MCH Group. “We believe we will build something completely new that will attract art buyers and fans from the region and all over the world.”
While Art Basel already operates in Basel, Miami Beach, Hong Kong, and Paris, each fair is shaped by its location—and Doha promises to be no exception. The inaugural edition of Art Basel Qatar will be tightly curated, bringing together a select cohort of leading galleries and artists while laying the foundations for long-term growth. Education, public engagement, and regional integration will be key pillars of the fair’s strategy.
Noah Horowitz, CEO of Art Basel, sees the fair as a way to deepen ties across the region: “The art scene across MENA has undergone exponential growth in recent decades… We are compelled by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa’s singular vision for the arts ecosystem in Qatar, and we share a commitment to supporting artists in realising their highest potential.”
QSI’s Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaïfi echoed this sentiment, describing the partnership as a legacy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. “Sports and culture are closely linked in their capacity to unite people,” he noted, “and that’s at the heart of QSI’s mission.”
With its strategic planning, cultural ambition and international gravitas, Art Basel Qatar is poised to transform Qatar’s contemporary art scene and shape the global art discourse.
