Acaye Kerunen reimagines art as a living practice of care and continuity.

21 April 2026

At Kunstmuseen Krefeld, ‘Apoi unfolds as part of the ongoing HL HE Dialog: What Comes After Art series, centring the deeply relational practice of Ugandan artist Acaye Kerunen. Installed across the modernist spaces of Haus Lange and Haus Esters, the exhibition shifts the question of what comes after art toward a quieter, more grounded inquiry, one rooted in material knowledge, collective labour, and the poetics of return.

Marking her first solo museum presentation in Germany, Kerunen’s work resists containment. Through handwoven textiles, sculptural forms, sound, and film, she activates an expanded field of making that draws on Indigenous knowledge systems and intergenerational exchange. Her materials are not inert. They carry the weight of land, language, and memory, binding together histories that are often overlooked or displaced.

In ‘Apoi’, weaving becomes both structure and gesture, a means of holding and mending. Kerunen’s practice foregrounds care as a method, privileging process over product and community over authorship. Within the HL HE Dialog framework, her work proposes that what comes after art is not absence, but continuation. A slow, deliberate reweaving of relations, where art remains inseparable from the conditions of life that sustain it.

This exhibition is on view at Haus Lange Haus Esters, Kunstmuseen Krefeld in Germany until 6 September 2026.
