Demetri Broxton’s first solo museum exhibition transforms ancestral fragments into luminous acts of remembrance at MoAD.

At the Museum of African Diaspora (MoAD), Oakland-based artist Demetri Broxton presents ‘Ancestral Echoes – Crops of Empire’, a powerful meditation on memory, migration, and the enduring presence of ancestors. Marking the artist’s first solo museum exhibition, the presentation brings together textile, beadwork, archival photography, and ritual materials in a body of work that reimagines African American ancestral figures as sites of dignity, resilience, and spiritual possibility.
Drawing from personal and collective histories, Broxton confronts the ruptures created by displacement and the incomplete archives of the African Diaspora. Through richly embellished portraits, he releases historical subjects from the confines of photographic documentation, situating them instead within expansive visual worlds shaped by care, reverence, and imagination.
Sequins, cowrie shells, screen-printed fabrics, tobacco, rice, sugar, and cotton become carriers of memory, linking African diasporic traditions with stories rooted in the American South, Louisiana Creole culture, and the Bay Area. Across the exhibition, ancestral absence is not treated as loss alone but as a space for reconstruction and renewal.
Rather than resolving historical fractures, Broxton honours them. ‘Ancestral Echoes – Crops of Empire’ invites viewers to consider ancestry as a living practice, one shaped through materiality, storytelling, and the ongoing work of remembrance.
This exhibition is on view at The Museum of African Diaspora in San Francisco until 16 August 2026.
