Amel Bashier’s ‘Essence of Life’ places women at the centre of histories too often written without them.

2 September 2026

Sudanese artist Amel Bashier turns attention towards the women whose labour, resilience and presence sustain communities, yet whose contributions remain persistently overlooked. Opening at ZOLLAMT MMK in Frankfurt, ‘Essence of Life is Bashier’s first institutional solo exhibition and brings together numerous new works created for the occasion.

Born in 1981, Bashier approaches the female figure as both an intimate presence and a broader symbol of endurance. Women appear alone, in trios and in larger gatherings, at work and at home. They are radiant and commanding, but equally tender, vulnerable and contemplative. Through these shifting states, Bashier resists singular representations of womanhood, instead creating space for complexity, dignity and recognition.

Her distinctive visual language draws upon Nubian, Assyrian and Indian figural traditions. Enlarged hands and feet, vivid contrasting colours, symmetry and flattened compositions connect contemporary experience to longer histories of representation. The result is a body of work in which the personal and political quietly converge.

At its heart, ‘Essence of Life’ asks us to reconsider whose work holds societies together and whose stories are granted visibility.

This exhibition will be on view at ZOLLAMT MMK, Frankfurt, from 12 September 2026 to 10 January 2027.
