Writing Art History Since 2002

First Title

Welcoming two new residents, the museum deepens its commitment to inclusion at the heart of artistic and educational practice.

In July 2025, the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM Rio) will launch the Incluir residency—a pioneering initiative created exclusively for individuals with physical, mental, intellectual, sensory, or multiple disabilities. The program welcomes two selected residents, Ariom Pimenta and Lari Ferreira, for a two-month paid fellowship designed to embed inclusive thinking into the museum’s daily life and long-term strategies.

Structured around a hybrid format (in-person and online), the residency runs from July 5 to September 5, 2025, with each participant contributing approximately 20 hours per week. Residents receive a monthly stipend of R$2,500, totalling R$5,000 per person over the whole period.

Two substitutes, Janaina Pereira Salgues and Nadiana Assis de Carvalho, were also named during the selection process.

A Timeline of Access

The 2025 residency cycle followed a transparent and inclusive selection process:

  • Deadline to apply: June 5, 2025
  • Interview shortlist announced: June 20, 2025
  • Candidate interviews: June 23–25, 2025
  • Final results announced: June 30, 2025
  • Residency period: July 5 – September 5, 2025

A Residency Rooted in Dialogue and Co-Creation

More than a professional opportunity, Incluir is an invitation to rethink the ways museums engage with difference. Residents bring their lived experiences and unique knowledge to the heart of MAM Rio’s operations—working alongside teams across departments to develop methodologies that foreground access, care, and participation.

Whether in educational design, cultural programming, or institutional accessibility strategies, the program embodies accessibility as both a guiding principle and a transformative practice.

It also builds on the museum’s ongoing Museu-Escola (Museum-School) project—an initiative that positions cultural spaces as dynamic and inclusive environments for learning and exchange.

Institutional Recognition and Impact

In 2024, MAM Rio received the Outstanding Museum Practice Award from CIMAM (International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art) in recognition of its work on Incluir and other inclusive programming. The award ceremony took place in Los Angeles, underscoring the global significance of the museum’s approach.

The residency is sponsored by the City of Rio de Janeiro and its Municipal Department of Culture, with support from Alta Diagnósticos, Concremat, Deloitte, Guelt Investimentos, Multiterminais, Piemonte, Rede D’or, and Transegur through the Municipal Law of Incentive to Culture – ISS Law.

Shaping Inclusive Futures

With Incluir, MAM Rio sets a precedent for how institutions can foster more just, accessible, and inclusive futures—not through token gestures, but by centring disabled practitioners as co-creators of cultural life. As the residency unfolds through September, it offers a living model of institutional care, collaboration, and transformation.
