Open Call:
The Studio Museum in Harlem invites applications for its 2026–27 Artist-in-Residence programme.
The residency will run from November 2, 2026, to October 3, 2027 and select a small cohort of artists for a year-long, studio-based programme.
Institutional Context:
Proposed in 1968, the Artist-in-Residence programme is a founding initiative of the Studio Museum in Harlem and remains central to its mission.
The museum is internationally recognised for its role in advancing the work of artists of African and Afro-Latinx descent, with the residency having supported over 150 artists since its inception.
Eligibility and Criteria:
The programme is open to artists aged 18 and older working across all media. While it is geared toward emerging practitioners, artists at all stages may apply.
The residency is intended for individual artists only and is not open to students or those currently participating in another residency or fellowship.
International applicants are eligible but must secure their own visas prior to arrival, as the museum does not provide visa sponsorship.
The programme is committed to accessibility and will accommodate applicants with visible and invisible disabilities based on individual needs.
Evaluation Process:
Applicants are assessed on the strength of their artistic practice, as demonstrated through submitted materials including a portfolio, artist statement, and CV.
Optional letters of recommendation may be included to support the application.
Selection is competitive and based on artistic merit and the applicant’s potential to benefit from a structured residency environment.
Practical Information:
Each selected artist receives:
- A stipend of $50,000, paid biweekly over the year.
- 24-hour access to a private studio and shared spaces within the museum
- Regular studio visits and feedback from the curatorial team and staff
Participants are expected to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week to their studio practice.
The residency culminates in a public exhibition featuring work developed during the programme.
