421 launches its six-month internship program in Abu Dhabi, offering early career creatives the chance to gain hands-on experience across key cultural fields.

421 has opened applications for its 2026 Graduate Internship Program, a six-month paid opportunity designed to support emerging creative professionals as they transition from higher education into careers in the cultural sector. Running from January to June 2026, the program invites four successful applicants to join the 421 team in Abu Dhabi, working on-site across one of four focus areas: Communications and Marketing, Learning Initiatives and Programs, Exhibition Design and Special Projects, or Public Programs and Community Engagement.

A platform for professional growth

The internship is structured to provide participants with a practical, behind-the-scenes understanding of how cultural institutions operate on a day-to-day basis. Interns will work closely with department managers, gaining skills in administration, communication, project coordination, budget management, and exhibition or program design. The program also incorporates mentorship, seminars, workshops, and lectures with cultural leaders, ensuring that participants leave with both hands-on training and critical insights.

A distinctive feature of the program is its emphasis on independent initiative. Each intern is asked to pitch a personal project aligned with their department, which is then supported and implemented with the wider 421 team. Previous cohorts have left a lasting legacy—most notably, the Teen Studios pilot proposed by 2020 interns Sreerag Jyothish and Aya Afaneh, which has since been developed into 421’s ongoing Teens Program.

Who can apply?

The program is open to all nationalities who are residents of the UAE and have recently completed undergraduate or postgraduate studies. Four interns will be selected to join the January–June 2026 cycle, working full-time on-site at 421.

Participants will benefit from:

  • In-depth exposure to exhibition planning and execution
  • Direct collaboration with artists, curators, and cultural practitioners
  • Experience in community outreach and education initiatives
  • Structured mentorship and critique sessions with 421’s professional team
  • Networking opportunities within the regional contemporary art ecosystem

Building pathways into the cultural sector

Since its inception, 421 has consistently invested in supporting early-career practitioners. The Graduate Internship Program builds on this mission by offering not only professional training but also the chance to actively contribute to the development of Abu Dhabi’s creative landscape. By combining institutional guidance with individual initiative, the program fosters a new generation of cultural workers equipped with the skills, confidence, and networks to thrive.

Applications for the 421 Graduate Internship Program 2026 are open until November 1, 2025. Apply via Submittable at 421.online.
