First Title

Over the past 21 years the Market Laboratory has established itself as a leading theatre skills training institution in Southern Africa.

From the Press Release: “The Community Theatre Festival has become an iconic event in the national arts landscape where over 40 theatre groups from across South Africa showcase their theatre works that have never been seen before. This year’s festival promises to bring a diverse number of works that celebrates the beauty of our country, language, heritage and stories. The festival has been a launching pad for many artists and we once more seek to unearth the next Kenneth Nkosi (Kenny Makenzo, White Wedding, Tsotsi), Ronnie Nyakale (Yizo Yizo, A Place Called Home, Rhythm City), Mpho Molepo(Isidingo, Rhythm City) Mduduzi Mabaso (Yizo Yizo), Smangele Mbatha (Zone 14), Terry Pheto (Zone 14, Tsotsi), Harriet Lehabe (Yesterday,) Mncedisi Shabangu (Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year 2005), Meshack Mavuso (Isidingo). What has been said about the festival: This gave me the ideal opportunity to mention my long held desire to create a platform in South Africa for young people who had fallen through the cracks of Apartheid and who had been victims of Bantu education to find their voice to speak out about issues that concerned them and their communities — and to give them the skills to do this. — Dr John Kani (founder) As a result of these initiatives I can truly say that the Market Laboratory is indeed the crucible of new work and new ideas. — Vanessa Cooke (retired head of the Laboratory) The festival: The festival runs from Sunday 29 May to Saturday 4 June. Performances: Sunday: 14h30 for 15h00 (Launch) Monday — Saturday: 09:00 — 17:30 (Daily) For more information contact: Thandeka Nheke or Oscar Motsikoe 011 838 7498 or “
