The Norval Foundation opens its doors to Cape Town this weekend

The Norval Foundation will be opening its doors to the public this Saturday evening. And it’s with much excited anticipation that the art community awaits its reception. Having developed seemingly under the radar, amidst the fading smoke of the triumphant bang that the Zeitz MOCAA opened its doors with at the end of last year, it will be interesting to observe how the museum fares – competing alongside the world’s largest museum of contemporary African art.

But perhaps it will be more a complement than a competition as Norval is a centre for research and exhibition that focuses on predominantly South African art spanning both the 20th and 21st century. This will include South African contemporary art but not be restricted by it. The museum will also house one of the largest private art collections in the country, as well as custodianship of the Gerard Sekoto Foundation, Edoardo Villa Estate Collection and the Alexis Preller Archive.

Situated in the Steenburg area of Cape Town, at the base of the Table Mountain National Park, the Norval Foundation places a special focus on the surrounding natural habitat, with work being done to simultaneously rehabilitate and restore the surrounding wetland ecosystem. Its sculpture garden, outdoor amphitheatre, purpose-built exhibition spaces and research library offer a multi-sensory experience.

The Norval Foundation will be opening to the public on Saturday, 28 April 2018
